Windows XP - Map Network Drive (no replies)

Windows XP's WebDAV functionality is fairly buggy. Thankfully we've found new workaround to avoid the shortcoming of dealing with XP.

- Create a folder at the root level of Air Sharing and name it whatever you want
- Go to Air Sharing settings and into the Sharing section and make sure the port is set to 80 for http://
- Go to your PC and open up a Windows Explorer window
- Click on Tools at the top and select Map Network Drive...
- Enter your iPhone's IP address or Bonjour name as displayed by Air Sharing followed by the name of the folder you just created. For example, http://10.0.1.1/documents
- Click Finish

You should now be connected to Air Sharing from your XP machine. No third party software required and no faulty Windows patch to install. XP won't let you connect to the root level and thus the reason for the folder creation at the beginning. I hope this simplifies some users setup and use of Air Sharing.

Cheers,

Disclaimer: There are known issues with Windows XP's WebDAV support. So, you must download and install Microsoft Software Update for Web Folders first.

Open the Start menu and select My Network Places.

In the Network Tasks panel in the blue toolbar on the left click Add a Network Place.

Select Choose another network location and then click Next.

Enter Air Sharing's IP address and click Next. The IP address will be in the format http://x.x.x.x:8080 Alternatively, if Bonjour has been connected (e.g. if you have installed Bonjour for Windows, iTunes or Safari), you may enter Air Sharing's Bonjour address. The advantage of using the Bonjour address is that it will always be the same (unless you change the name of your device),whereas the IP address may change from one day to the next.

If prompted (i.e. if you have turned on Require Password in Air Sharing), enter your username and password.

Enter a name for this new connection and click Next.

Be sure Open this network place when I click Finish is checked and then click Finish.

If the Windows way isn't working for you you're not alone. We recommend downloading and using NetDrive if you're running Windows XP because it's far more stable. Instructions for using NetDrive can be found here.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Guide (no replies)

Here are the steps to perform, under Vista or Windows 7, to Map the Network Drive.

1. Open Windows Explorer, Press the "Alt" key to display the Menu and then select "Tools->Map a Network Drive". This brings up the following dialogue, which I then fill in with either the Bonjour name (as used in this example) or the IP address.

If you are using an IP address you would use the same URL syntax, but with the IP address not the Bonjour name. For example http://10.0.1.10:8080/

2. If you do not have "Require Password" and a Username and Password set under the "Sharing Security" Air Sharing options, all you need to do now is hit "Finish" and it will map your drive.

If you do have the "Require Password" option set, if click on Finish it will then bring up the following dialogue asking you for a login in as password.

Unfortunately once you hit "OK" Vista will prepend the machine name to the username and will fail to connect, you'll see the following dialogue, where you can see the prepended username text. This bug was fixed in Windows 7. So, once you enter your credentials the first time you should be fine and it should map your drive without issue.

In order to remedy the situation click "Cancel" which will bring you back to the Map Network Drive Dialogue, and the continue with step 3.

3. This time instead of clicking "Finish" click on "Connect using a different user name", which will bring up the following dialogue.

Enter your user name and password and then click "OK", once your are returned to the Map Network Drive dialogue click on "Finished". You will see the "Attempting to Connect" dialogue:

and then the mapped network drive will appear:

Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) or Leopard (10.5.X)

Air Port Interface (Wi-Fi)

Wi-Fi Access Point

Air Sharing requires an Wi-Fi network connection on both the iPhone and the computer you are using to connect. This can either be a standard wi-fi network or an Ad-Hoc network.

Configure Wi-Fi on the iPhone

From the Home screen select the "Settings" application

You'll be presented with the main "Settings" page.

Click on the "Wi-Fi" tab, to get to this next screen

Now select the Wi-Fi network that you wish to use, or if it does not show up select the "Other" tab to display the following dialogue and enter the network details:

Once you have connected to the Wifi-Network you can confirm this by touching on the Blue Arrow on the network tab. It will display the following screen:

Configuring Wi-Fi on the Mac

You must ensure that your Mac is configured to use the same Wi-Fi network that you have your iPhone connected to. Start by clicking on the Wi-Fi icon located on the task bar . This will bring up the following Air Port selection menu:

Select the same Wi-Fi network from the list that your iPhone is connected to.

Configuring Air Sharing Options

When Air Sharing starts you will be presented with the following main screen, which shows the default files and directories shipped with Air Sharing:

Click on the "Settings" icon at the bottom right of the Air Sharing screen. This will bring up the following screen.

Start by toggling the "Enable Sharing" option to switch on sharing on the iPhone. Then toggle "Require Password", to configure a User name and Password, on the following screen:

Then, if desired, configure an Application Lock Passcode. This is a four digit PIN that will need to be entered everytime Air Sharing is run. It prevents unauthorized users from accessing the files on your iPhone. This will bring up the following entry screen.

To make sure that Air Sharing is not interrupted whilst mounted, you will probably want to disable the "Allow Sleep" option. This will ensure that the iPhone will not sleep.

Determining the URL to connect to

The main Air Sharing page displays the IP address of the iPhone, and the URL to connect to. The "Connection Help" screen, which will provide both the IP address based URL, and the Bonjour URL can be accessed by clicking on the small W-Fi icon . It will display the following screen:

Enter the IP address or Bonjour name for your iPhone, as shown in the "Connection Help" screen in Air Sharing. For example, if the iPhone has the IP address 10.0.2.99 the URL to use in "Connect To Server" is http://10.0.2.99:8080

Press the "Connect" button, and if you set a sharing username and password in Air Sharing you will be presented with the following dialogue in which enter them. You can choose to allow the Keychain to remember this username and password.

After authenticating Finder will present you with a network mounted connection to the iPhone as below:

You can now drag and drop files to the iPhone, you can create, delete and rename directories and files.
